So you want to go trekking in peru. Machi Pichou is waiting. the history goes as far back as the Inca's. The ancient civilisation offers more than meets the eye. Not only is there incredible views and mountains, but there is also an aire of history and spirit that only peru can give you.

Hiking in high altitudes is very challenging and exhasuting, and anyone who is new to it may be surprised at the difficulty. People often get ill and need to take many rest stops. Expect shortness of breath, slow movements, and possibly headaches. Even the most fit people can have adverse reactions to the altitude, so heed any advice suggested by travel doctors, and don’t overdo it. This hike is a good indication of what to expect when hiking the Inca Trail.

Trekking Holidays in Spain

The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is the best known and most popular trek in Peru let alone Cuzco. Visitors come from all over the world to see Machu Picchu, one of the Wonders of the World. The best know route for this is the one they call the Inca Trail. People come to see the inca ruins and the stunning scenery. Guides dictate the history and the whole experience is unforgettable. Just being up in the mountains in the high altitude is enough to get the heart racing. The total distance of the Inca trail is approximately 43 kilometres. You begin by crossing the narrow bridge at Kusicancha, afterwhich you trek for about 4 hrs and camp at either Wayllabamba or Llullucha.
The Inca Trail links a range of stunningly preserved Inca ruins. Along the way the natural scenery is breath-taking, with views of snow capped mountains and the clods of forests. you wonder how they ever made such ruins so high. Most travel companies will have maps, guided tours and lots to choose from.

With so many places to trek and explore: africa, nepal, spain, france, brazil, europe, africa, south america, uk, portugal, bali, costa rica, australia, hawaii, lanzarote, fuerteventura, canary islands, the list goes on!

  • Day 1
We depart at 6:00 A.M. from Cusco by car to Mollepata (Cruz Pata), where we will have breakfast. Here we will start our hike to Challacancha, where we will have lunch. Afterwards we continue our hike to Salcantaypampa (situated 3,800 meters above sea level) where we will have dinner and will overnight at the feet of the mountain Nevado Salkantay.

This day we walk approximately four hours and we will enjoy the lovely views of Nevado de Umantay and a part of Nevado de Salkantay.
  • Day 2
At 07:00 A.M. we will have breakfast. Afterwards we go to the mountainpass Salkantay to catch a sight of the Valley of Vilcabamba and of the mountain chains of Padreoc, Pumasillo, Wayracmachay (4,600 meters above sea level). Here we can spot an Inca trail that comes from Cusco and goes to Choquekirao. Then we go down to Ichupata where we will have lunch. Later on we continue to Wayracmachay, where we will camp overnight at the feet of the mountain Nevado Umantay (4,120 meters above sea level.). This day we walked for about 5 hours.
  • Day 3
At 08:00 we will have breakfast. This day we continue our trek by going down to Rayampata, a very small village surrounded with beautiful nature and consisting of 4 families. Furthermore, we go to Ccollpapampa to have lunch and to visit the thermal baths. These baths have medical water, which appears, out of the ground like an iceberg. At this place you can also pay a visit to the archeological site named Platerayoc. We will stay here for the whole afternoon to relax and enjoy. After this we will go back to Ccollpapampa to have dinner and to camp overnight. We will walk for about 3 hours.
  • Day 4
At 07:00 A.M. we will have breakfast and we begin our hike with direction to Playa ó Miskabamba. On this part of the trail we visit the waterfalls of Pacche. These are 11 different waterfalls, each with a height of approximately 50 meters. In Miskabamba we also will have lunch. The climate is warm in this area and a difference with other warm areas is that in this place the typical agricultural production consists of pomegranate trees. After lunch we continue to walk to Llactapata o Vaquería, an archeological Inca site that probably was a checkpoint for the payments in Machu Picchu. From here you can descry a glimpse of Machu Picchu. We will have our camp in Llactapata, which has a magical view over Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu and Salkantay. This day we walked approximately 8 hours.
  • Day 5
At 06:30 A.M. we will have breakfast. Afterwards we will go to Puerte Ruinas, where we will catch our bus to go to Machu Picchu. We will have about 3 hours to visit Machu Picchu and for lunch we will get a lunch box. Later on we will take the train back to go to Cusco.

"Had a really good time trekking Peru. Machu Pichu was amazing , definetly the highlight of teh trip. Peru has so much to offer, it really is mindblowing. I highly recomend anyone to go trekkign in peru. It is a must! "

"Hi Vyky, I've been meaning to write since I got back, but I have just been so ill - was begining to wonder if I had swine flu! I can't imagine how I got this from trekking in spain, definetly the aiport coming back from madrid. Anyway I wanted to give feedback on the holiday, which was on 19th March, to Lanzarote in Celeste apts, with lots of trekking a scuba divinglesson and surf lessons.

I had a great time, and loved Lanzarote, the weather was lovely, the surfing was also great, I had an even better time trekking all arounf teh canary islands. The apartments were lovely, I even aquired a pet cat!

The only comment I have is that while I'm used to travelling on my own, I'm still apprehensive about going into bars on my own. Greg told me everyone met at the Poco loco at 6.30 certain evenings, I had visions of this being a bar, where I would wander around trying to work out who was on the Active adventure holidays and getting stared at by locals, so I felt a bit uncomfortable about doing this and didn't go the first night, it was only because I surfed the next day that I met people, and I saw that the poco loco wasn't really a bar, that I was ok with going there on my own.  So I don't know if there is a way to make it clear in the welcome pack, that it's more of a meeting place for active adventure people only? altough I'm sure it's not exclusive to them, maybe it's just me :-/ felt a bit shy going there on my own the first time, obviously ok once you know people :-)

I would definately go again, and it's great to know that it easy to go by yourself and not feel like billy no mates. The trekking in spain is unbelievable. Definetly recommend it! :-)

Thanks for sorting out a great room for me and getting me the wine on my arrival. Will no doubt speak to you soon to book up the next one."
